trip tips

The success of any birdwatching tour depends on a variety of factors. The first factor is a well designed itinerary that includes zones with high biodiversity in bird fauna. You’ll also want to consider whether your visit to Panama falls during a season of the year when you will find both migratory birds and residential species. It is important to have favorable climatic conditions as well. Another factor is having a group of working and enthusiastic birders. A good local guide is a must. And, of course, some good luck is necessary.

When we analyze the distribution of the bird fauna in Panama, we find that there are three main regions: western, central and eastern Panama. It is very important to understand that these main regions can be subdivided by altitude or geographical area, and they each have very specific and particular bird fauna.

The most diverse bird fauna are those of the wet lowlands (sea level to 2500 feet) and the foothills of the forests. The rich belt of the foothills goes from 2500 feet (800 mts) to around 4800 feet (1600 mt) and is wet on both sides of the country and good for many bird specialties. As one moves up the mountain slopes, the size of the bird fauna decreases.
